Goose River | Rockport, Maine

Goose River begins at the outlet of Hosmer Pond, 500 feet above sea level. Over its three-mile course there are waterfalls, deep pools and shallow gravel bars. The river widens and narrows then drops through a canyon to sea level at Rockport Harbor. The eleven-foot daily tides from the harbor meet the fresh water at a small waterfall. The river can be a roaring torrent, a beige smudge or a dry stream bed depending on rainfall and snow melt. Nothing of historic importance happened on this river.

The Goose River runs through my backyard. We moved into the house in January, 2019 and I began to explore the river with my camera. I write field notes to record geology, geography, history, hydrology weather, wildlife, and memories after each outing. Much has been written about river as a metaphor for time and I can feel that as I traipse along the bank.

The project became book of photographs and essays which I self-published in 2020. I continue to photograph the Goose, fascinated by its ever-changing personality.
